The cake, after pizza, tastes so sweet and sluggish

we breathe through our mouths and cool the thirst

with more beer. He smiled through the song, his wife

holding his hand between both of hers,

but he’s not eating, hasn’t been. When he picks up,

it sounds like more of the same, his voice clear,

becalmed, the air combed loose with candle smoke,

that in the other time he won’t forget,

no more than he’d forget the sun and sand,

it was fun to be last man out and torch a village.

Not to watch it, but to do it, leave it,

then you never wanted to see it again. You lost it.

That part, too, comes back; not the sickening fear,

but the knowledge that fun is what it truly was.
